From Slow Beginnings
Today didn’t start well, but I know about the need for perseverance, so I kept right on going.
I lost an hour and a half of my morning trying to get to a place where I could start to be productive.
Let’s me honest, in real terms, that’s not a big deal – it’s just a little annoying – but it is just the sort of thing that can easily have stopped me in my tracks.
It can be really easy to use such things as an excuse to write off the whole day.
But today, I’m determined to stay positive and persevere.
Here are my top 5 reasons to Persevere
1. I’m already ahead of the game, and I don’t want to allow myself to fall back into the pack?
I’ve started on my journey to success.
I know I can get a bit obsessive about it, but I have a plan, and I back up my plan with a daily to do list.
I try very hard to make my daily to do list challenging but realistic.
That’s because, I find completing a challenging set of tasks highly motivational.
If it’s too easy, then I don’t get the satisfaction and the motivation. If it’s too hard, then over the medium to long term, it become more difficult to maintain motivation.
I have a few techniques that help me to plan realistically.
- The smallest planning unit on my to do list is 15 minutes, no matter how small the task.
- Plan to use 80% of the available time (so for example, if I have 10 hours available, I will plan 8 hours of work).
- Don’t plan to work 7 days a week. OK in practice, I sometimes do, but that just gets me ahead of the game !
- Do take regular breaks.
I believe that I concentrate best, and am most productive in short bursts, so I often use the Pomorodo technique. I set a timer for 25 minutes and at the end of that 25 minute period I take a 5 minute break.
Every 2 or 3 hours, I take a 20 minute break, and I’m sure to break for 30 minutes for lunch.
I will perseverance and I will try to complete everything on my to do list each day.
In will make it a habit to complete everything on my to do each day.
2. I know that if I can keep on going, eventually, I will succeed
Some days will be difficult, and I will lose ground, but I will do all I can to stay focussed.
I know that if I put it off until tomorrow, then tomorrow will become more difficult.
BUT… I will use the 15 minute rule.
If I can’t resolve a problem in 15 minutes, I will stop, and I will either ask for help, or come back to it later (or both!)
I will keep going. If I haven’t finished all my tasks at the end of the working day, I will try to work a little longer until they are finished.
Perseverance will get me where I need to be.
3. The minor irritations of my morning are nothing at all compared to the genuine hardships some people have to endure.
4. I may not have made much progress so far today, but with perseverance,I have made some, and some progress is much better than none!
There really are only 2 choices.
You can persevere and you WILL make progress, even if, sometimes, it’s not as much as you would like.
OR
You can make your excuses and give up.
One is easy and gets you nowhere. the other is harder, but much more satisfying.
Perseverance is the key to progress.
5. It’s up to me to succeed. I can blame someone or something, or I can just get right on and do it.
It’s my choice, and I want to make the right one.
I can and will sometimes do the wrong thing. I hope, when that happens that I will realise quickly, or that someone will be kind enough to point it out.
But I will keep on going. Perseverance alone is not enough. I will try to be flexible, and I will seek help, because although I can do it on my own, and if I have to I will, I recognise that it will be easier with help from those around me.
