Top Tips for Time Management

Do you ever find that there are just not enough hours in the day?

Too much to do and too little time to do it.

And yet we’ve all heard the old saying ‘If you want something done, ask a busy person’.
So how does that work? How come busy people can find the time to do things when we cant?

Could it be because they just don’t sleep, and are doing things 24/7? Of course the answer to  that is no!

They just know how to manage their time effectively. And the keys to time management aren’t difficult to learn. They are, however, things that need to become part of your daily life. You wont achieve your goals by managing your time effectively every Monday, and not bothering for the rest of the week.
Motivation is often thought to be the single most important factor in achieving your personal goals, and maybe that’s true, but how much easier if, along with the motivation, you also have the time to devote to achieving your goals?

There are some very easy time management techniques, and some that are more complex.
One of the most straightforward is to use To Do lists, and tick off things as you complete them. This means that you don’t waste time wondering what to do next, but it’s important to stay focused. Don’t go off at tangents and start to do things that are not on the list.
If they need to be done, add them to tomorrow’s list!
Prioritization is also critical. when you write your list, make sure you are clear about what MUST be done today.
It might be useful to borrow here from project management techniques, and use the MoSCoW prioritization method to split your list into things you:
  • MUST do today
  • SHOULD do today
  • COULD do today
  • WONT do today
Lots of the ‘easy things’ tie back to the SMART principles we’ve talked about elsewhere.
Be Specific and Realistic about what is Achievable in a window of Time.
